Demetrio was born on the shores of the Black Sea in Romania, in 1936. Caught in the years of war and recovery, he emigrated together with his parents through central Europe, disembarking in Buenos Aires to start a new life, in 1949. In 1970, he finally settled in the Sierras of Córdoba, at a place called La Falda, in the heart of the Punilla Valley.
His parents, despite having been witness to destruction, misery, and poverty, taught him that life is made rich through its numerous manifestations.
This is what he expected about his own work: "I aim to conserve the inheritance of that wisdom in my palette knife and pencil, through form, proportions, harmony, and contrasts.
It is the prerogative of a painter to express himself in a specific manner, be it through chromatic sets or monotone strokes, as best he see fit to transmit beauty, madness, irrationality, tenderness, or to make social commentary. All forms of testimony are valuable and allowed, deserving the dignity of consideration and respect.
For my part, I hope to share with the person standing in front of my oil work, my emotions, my moods, and a dose of the conscience that forms us into something wondrous. I hope, as well, that viewers enjoy themselves through my work, and that they do so freely, based on their own understanding and individual personality.
In my work I take into consideration my friends, all those who befriend light and color, to rescue in art the uniquely beautiful corners of Córdoba, as well as the motifs of seascapes that carry in them a thankful memory of my father Konstantino Miciu, master of both art made with the brush and art made through living.
On my canvases I attempt only to mold light and color. Light should help us to discern that which color invites us to perceive".
Demetrio Miciu Nicolaevici passed away on September the 12th 2015.
